For Immediate Release: Mirror, Mirror and Postcards from Old Bisbee at the Subway Gallery

Sep 22 2010 Published by MmeMagpie under Uncategorized

Subway Gallery is delighted to present its featured exhibitions “Mirror Mirror”, and “Postcards from Old Bisbee” opening on Saturday, October 9th, with a reception from 5 pm – 8 pm. “Mirror Mirror” features the work of Subway Gallery member, Liz Hampton-Derivan, and guest artist Andrea Robinson.

Robinson’s work explores the relationship between the mythical, fantastical, and feminine.  The fusion of mirrors and collage allows the viewer to catch a glimpse of him or herself within the compositions.  Robinson assembled a companion collection of wearable art in the form of mirrored pendants highlighting individual elements from the larger themes.

Hampton-Derivan works in encaustic and mixed media. Encaustic is a painting technique using beeswax, which was used to create portraits in Greco-Roman Egypt as far back as 100 B.C., now a revived contemporary painting medium. Her images begin with line drawings converted from artwork throughout the centuries (1400s – present) that show a human fascination with mirrors and our reflections.

“Postcards from Old Bisbee” features the work of guest artist, Mike Derivan, who has used turn-of-the-century photographs of Bisbee found on postcards. He has “painted and reworked” the original postcards and created large format prints both reflecting a nostalgic past and colorful present-day Bisbee.

Please join us for the opening reception. Refreshments will be served.  Show runs through November 10th.  Subway Gallery is open Thursday thru Sunday from 11 – 5pm.  We are conveniently located in the heart of historic Old Bisbee at 30 Main Street.  For more information call 520-432-9143 during business hours or visit subwaygallerybisbee.com.
